Move Fast and Break Things

“Move fast and break things” is one of the famous mottos coined by Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Facebook. In my eyes, and I’m guessing that I’m not the only one, this motto is encouraging innovation and fearless creation as long as it’s done fast to keep up with industry growth. A motto reflects the company’s stage at a certain time, and we can see that Facebook’s motto kept changing during the company’s growth and maturity. They started with “Move fast and break things,” then changed it to “Move fast with stable infrastructure,” and finally today it’s simply “Move fast.” It doesn’t mean that the old motto was wrong; it means that the motto was right for the company up to a certain point and the time has come to change it. I believe every company should have one motto that will reflect the company stage and where they want to go. When to change it is what I believe is one of the hardest questions, but I’m guessing you just feel that it’s the right time and it naturally happens. Sometimes, you just realize it too late after some major incidents that made your company look bad.
